Write Etsy descriptions
with ChatGPT.

Use ChatGPT to turn verified product details into an Etsy listing description that answers buyer questions without inventing claims or losing your voice.

ChatGPT can help organize a product description, but it cannot inspect your item or know your shop policies unless you provide them. The quality of the starting information determines how useful the draft will be.

Think of the first message as a product brief, not a request for persuasive adjectives. Buyers need to understand what they will receive. Your distinctive voice can sit around those facts.

Make a short, factual brief

Before asking for copy, collect the details a buyer would normally ask you about. You can write these as plain notes; they do not need to sound polished.

  • Product: What is it, and what is included?
  • Materials and construction: What can you verify about how it is made?
  • Dimensions or capacity: Give units and explain any variation.
  • Options: Identify colors, sizes, or personalization choices.
  • Care and use: Include only instructions you know are appropriate.
  • Fulfillment: Use your actual processing and delivery information.

Mark unknowns explicitly. “Dishwasher suitability not verified” is more useful than leaving a gap that an AI draft might fill with a familiar claim.

Ask for structure before polish

A simple description can begin with a short introduction, followed by the important specifications, available options, and relevant care or fulfillment notes. Ask ChatGPT to make those sections easy to scan.

“Write a concise Etsy description using only the facts below. Start with what the buyer receives. Use a warm, plain-speaking tone. List missing information separately, outside the description.”

Keeping open questions outside the finished copy makes them harder to publish accidentally. Review the questions before refining the language.

Give your voice a reference

If you have an existing description that sounds like you, share a short excerpt and describe what you want to retain. You might prefer short sentences, minimal adjectives, or a personal note about the making process.

Be specific about words you would not use. Asking for “friendly but not overly enthusiastic” can help, but a concrete edit is even clearer: “Replace ‘the perfect companion’ with ‘a mug for your daily coffee.’”

Review every claim

Read the draft as if you were answering a buyer’s question. Is the capacity correct? Does a phrase imply the item is food-safe, waterproof, sustainable, or suitable for children? Are those claims established by your actual product information?

Remove unsupported promises even when they sound harmless. Also check whether the description refers to a photo, variant, or accessory that will not appear in the final listing.

Check the whole listing together

The title, description, options, and photos should describe the same item. Ask ChatGPT to identify inconsistencies in the information you provide, then verify them against the product itself.

When the text is approved, ask for one clean final version. If your kit connection is configured, you can request an unpublished Etsy draft using the agreed details. Saving a draft is a useful checkpoint, not the end of your review.

For the broader workflow, read how to manage Etsy listing work in one conversation.

Example: a factual description without extra promises

Suppose the verified facts are: one handmade ceramic mug, sage green glaze, 12 oz capacity, and no included accessories. Care instructions and dispatch timing are not yet confirmed.

“A handmade ceramic mug with a sage green glaze and a 12 oz capacity. This listing includes one mug; accessories are not included.”

This is a starting draft, not complete publish-ready copy. It avoids adding claims such as dishwasher-safe, lead-free, or ships tomorrow. Ask for the missing care and fulfillment details separately, then add only verified answers. This worked example is more useful than asking for an “SEO-optimized description” without product facts.

Use the description prompt template to supply your own details. Once the copy is approved, follow the draft-creation guide to understand the additional fields Etsy needs.
